You only get one opportunity to make a first impression. That means your first date can make or break your chances of having a great relationship in the future.
For this reason, it’s essential to put your best foot forward. Start by avoiding these seven annoying behaviors:
1. Arriving Too Late
No one wants to sit in a restaurant and wait for half an hour or longer for their date to show up. It isn’t very comfortable, and it makes them wonder if you have your priorities in order.
Try getting ready and leaving earlier than you would normally. It’s better to arrive too early than too late when you’re meeting someone for the first time.
2. Spending Too Much Time Looking at Your Phone
Excessive screentime is something our parents and grandparents didn’t have to worry about when they were searching for their soulmates, but these days, it’s one of the top complaints from people on the dating scene.
Around 70% of women and 69% of men say texting or being on the phone is one of the most irritating actions they deal with on a first date. So, put your phone down.
Unless you’re a doctor who is on call, it’s not going to hurt you to ignore your texts and emails for an hour or two. Show your date that they are your focus for the evening instead of constantly checking your Instagram feed to see what your other friends are up to.
3. Talking Only About Yourself
Your conservation on your first date should be a two-way street. Both of you should talk, and both of you should listen. But far too many people spend those first dates just talking about themselves.
Ask your date questions about their life. Even if you find that the person doesn’t interest you, it won’t hurt to be polite for one evening.
4. Being Rude to Servers and Other Staff
Not only should you be polite to your date, but you’ll want to be polite to any servers or other staff you encounter. The person waiting at your table, the person who sells you the movie tickets – they are human too.
Be kind. If they make a mistake, let them know it’s okay. This shows that you aren’t a jerk and increases your chances for a second date.
5. Dressing Inappropriately
You don’t have to be the best-looking person in the restaurant on your first date, but you want to at least put in a bit of effort. Wear something appropriate. Take a shower. Fix your hair.
On the other hand, please don’t overdo it. If you’re dressing for a beach date or meeting at a casual restaurant, you don’t want to show up in a suit.
In other words, look good, but keep in mind what’s appropriate for the place where you plan to meet your date. If you’re unsure of what to wear, ask a friend for advice or look it up online.
6. Saying “I Love You”
While you want to have a great conversation on your first date, there are some things you need to avoid saying. “I love you” is at the top of the list. Most people don’t know whether or not they’re in love on a first date, and even if you do, saying so can be sort of intimidating for the other person.
You may also want to avoid subjects like children, marriage, living together, and anything else about commitment or creating a future together. If things work out, you’ll have plenty of time to discuss those topics later.
7. Complaining about Your Ex
Whether you just broke up with your ex or you’ve been apart for a decade, and you can’t seem to get over it, talking about them isn’t the way to go. Complaining about them is even worse.
Your current date may be curious about your relationship history, but they want to know more about you, not the guy or girl who broke your heart. Trashing your ex will make you seem bitter. Your date may even assume you aren’t ready to move on to someone new.
